01 · The practice

Nephology is the study of clouds. This is a place to practise it slowly.

Everything on this page is drawn from the real atmosphere — the temperature two metres above the ground, the speed of the wind, the fraction of sky the clouds have claimed. Nothing is a photograph. The scene is generated, moment by moment, from the same numbers meteorologists read: a sky rebuilt from its measurements, moving at the pace of actual weather. Leave it open on a second screen. Let it change without telling you.

02 · Present readings

Four numbers, read closely.

Temperature
—
Measured two metres up, where a standing person keeps their face. The one number everyone asks the sky for first.
Wind
—
The clouds in this scene drift at this exact speed, scaled to the viewport. When the air is still, so is the page.
Cloud cover
—
The share of the dome currently held by cloud. Zero is an unbroken blue; one hundred is a ceiling of pewter.
Humidity
—
How much of itself the air is willing to admit. Past eighty percent, rain stops being a question of if.
03 · The repertoire

Ten skies live in this engine. Try one on.

Each state below is a full atmosphere — its own palette, light, particle field and pace. Ordinarily the weather chooses. Here, briefly, you may.

“The sky was here before every calendar, and it keeps the only honest schedule. We built this page so you could check it the way you check the time — and then, unlike the time, simply watch it.”
