NOX BOTANICA

open only after dusk

Keeper's Preface

By day this glasshouse is empty โ€” bare beds, dark soil, the smell of rain on iron. The collection only consents to exist after the sun has fully set, and no instrument we own can explain where it goes in the meantime.

Field Notice โ„– 7 Lanterns are issued at the gate and must be carried at all times. The specimens read white light as an insult and electric light as a lie. Amber glass only. Walk slowly; several of the plants are listening, and one of them is counting.

The Collection

Five specimens, pressed in light

A translucent glass flower glowing cyan, petals veined violet, beaded with dew

I โ€” WEST TRANSEPT

Lucerna vitrea

The Glasslight

Found flowering at three in the morning, humming faintly at the pitch of a struck wine glass. The petals are cold to look at and colder to regret. Visitors report the bloom turning โ€” very slowly, over the course of an hour โ€” to face whoever has watched it longest.

II โ€” THE SPIRAL WALK

Spiralis emberi

The Ember Fiddlehead

Uncurls exactly once per night, and never all the way. The spiral holds warmth the way a kiln holds an afternoon; moths sleep pressed against it and wake up braver. Our head gardener insists the coil is a sentence written in an alphabet of one letter.

III โ€” THE UNDER-BED

Mycena rosaria

The Choir of Small Lamps

A colony that dims one cap at a time when spoken to, as though counting the syllables. Beneath the bed, the mycelium glows up through the soil in long branching sentences that no one on staff has finished translating, and no one off staff is permitted to try.

IV โ€” THE APSE

Aviflora smaragdina

The Watching Orchid

The bloom resembles a hummingbird so exactly that it once fooled an actual hummingbird, which stayed for three nights. What appears to be an eye is, our botanists insist, only a drop of dew. Our botanists no longer make eye contact with it.

V โ€” THE COLD POND

Nepenthes glacialis

The Frostmouth

A pitcher of chilled light that smells of rain about to happen. Nothing that lands on its rim has ever been seen to leave, and nothing that lands on its rim has ever been heard to complain. We keep its bed six feet from the path, for the path's sake.

Practicalities

Visiting after dark

Hours โ„– 1

Gates open at civil dusk and close one hour before dawn, whenever that happens to be. We do not publish clock times; the garden does not keep them. If you can still read this page by skylight, you are early.

Lanterns โ„– 2

Issued at the Lantern Gate, amber glass only, one per visitor. Phones sleep in wax-sealed pouches until you leave. Photography is not forbidden, exactly โ€” but the flash is always answered, and never by us.

Conduct โ„– 3

Speak softly and finish your sentences โ€” Mycena rosaria counts syllables and dislikes fragments. Stay on the marked path. If a bloom turns toward you, you may nod. It is considered polite.

Do not touch Lucerna vitrea. It remembers.

It has remembered since 1893, and it has been very patient with all of us. The visitor concerned made a full recovery and now works nights at the gate, where the flower can keep an eye on him. โ€” The Keeper
