The Meridian Grand

A Grand Hotel of the Modern Age  ·  New Alexandria

Est. MCMXXIX

Chapter One

The Hotel

Thirty-one storeys of bronze and certainty, raised in the last gold hour of an age.

A Sunrise, Indoors

One does not enter the Meridian Grand so much as one is received by it. Overhead, a ceiling of gilded rays fans outward from a single lantern, so that every arrival occurs, quite deliberately, at dawn. The floor is black marble veined with amber, inlaid with the bronze meridian line from which the house takes its name.

Porters in bottle-green livery still announce guests by hand-bell. The management sees no reason to stop.

The Nine O’Clock Pour

Each evening at the stroke of nine, a tower of one hundred and twenty-nine coupes is filled from a single magnum — one glass for every room on the meridian side of the house. The custom dates to opening night, 1929, when the champagne outlasted the speeches by a comfortable margin.

Guests are invited to take the glass nearest them. The topmost coupe is never poured; it is reserved, the staff will tell you, for a guest who has not yet returned.

Suites & Salons

Every floor a latitude; every door a small, bronze sunrise.

The Bronze Express

Four elevators of chased bronze rise thirty-one floors without a sound worth mentioning. The doors part along an engraved sunrise; the attendants know every guest’s floor by heart, and several by habit.

The Meridian Ballroom

Beneath a seven-tiered chandelier of Bohemian crystal, the parquet has carried ten thousand foxtrots and one famous mystery. The west windows are timed, precisely, to the setting of the sun.

No. III — The Summit

The Celestial Terrace

Thirty-one floors above the avenue, the city arranges itself into a private constellation. Cocktails are taken at dusk behind a balustrade of gilded chevrons; the skyline attends to the rest.

Chapter Three

The Legend

A hotel is only architecture until something unforgettable happens in it.

1929
The Opening Night

Nine hundred guests, a ribbon of gold lamé, and a mayor who stayed until four. The bronze meridian line is set into the lobby floor — and the first of the Nine O’Clock Pours empties a magnum before midnight.

1931
The Jazz Residencies

The Marlowe Quintet takes the Ballroom for eleven consecutive seasons. Radio WQXA broadcasts Live from the Meridian every Wednesday; half the city learns to foxtrot by wireless.

1938
The Mirror Masquerade

At the height of the winter masquerade, a guest in a gilt fox mask dances once with the heiress Violet Carrière, bows, and is never seen leaving. Found on the bandstand: a single brass key stamped Suite 1929 — a room the hotel has never contained. The case remains, agreeably, unsolved.

1968
The Long Intermission

Tastes turn to glass and steel; the Meridian dims her chandeliers and closes her doors. The furniture is sheeted, the coupes crated, the topmost glass left — per standing instruction — unpoured. The elevators are wound down on a Sunday.

2026
The Second Overture

After a restoration of eight years and eleven thousand sheets of gold leaf, every bulb of the lobby sunburst is relit at the stroke of nine. The orchestra plays the Marlowe book from the original charts. The fox mask, naturally, receives an invitation.
