FOLD折り紙工房

紙の工房 — Paper Atelier · Kyoto / Copenhagen

One sheet. No cuts. Only folds.

FOLD is a paper atelier practicing origami the old way — a single square, no scissors, no glue, transformed by the memory of the hands. We fold, we teach, and we send small paper animals out into the world.

The Practice

紙は全てを覚えている

Every morning begins the same way: a square of washi, thirty-two grams, the colour of weak tea. We warm it between our palms before the first crease, because cold paper argues and warm paper listens.

A fold is a decision you cannot hide. Ink can be painted over; clay can be pressed smooth again. But the paper remembers everything — every hesitation, every correction, every moment your attention wandered. This is why we practice. Not to make cranes, but to make one honest decision after another, twenty-three times in a row.

The atelier keeps two rooms: one in Kyoto beside the Kamo river, one in Copenhagen above a bakery. Both smell of kozo fibre and morning. Both hold the same rule, written above the door in pencil: begin again.

一枚の紙から
一

One sheet

Everything we make begins as a single square. Limitation is not the obstacle — it is the entire subject.

二

No cuts

Scissors solve problems the fold should have solved. If the form will not come, the sequence is wrong, not the paper.

三

Only folds

A finished piece can always be unfolded back to its square — a map of every choice, creased in light and shadow.

Folded Works

Orizuru折鶴

Kozo washi · 24 cm

“The crane is the first word every folder learns, and the last one anyone masters.”

Folded from a single 24-centimetre square of mulberry washi in blush, dyed in the studio with safflower. The beak is dipped in sumi ink — the only mark we allow ourselves. A thousand of these carry a wish; ours carry the day they were folded, pencilled inside the left wing.

Kitsune狐

Momigami · 18 cm

“Two folds give it ears. The third fold gives it an opinion.”

The fox mask is folded from crumpled momigami, tea-green, soft as cloth after kneading. It is the piece we give to students on their last day — a reminder that the simplest sequence, done with full attention, already has a face and is already watching you work.

Fune舟

Indigo aizome · 30 cm

“Every boat we fold is folded to be lost.”

Aizome paper, indigo-dyed and waxed at the keel, folded the way every child in the world seems to already know. Each August we fold three hundred and set them on the Kamo at dusk. None come back. That is the point — some work is finished only when you let the river have it.
